OBLONG SCHOOLS
ACADEMIC
2001
Annual Report
(number 7)
Dear
Friends:
Thank
you for your support of the Academic Foundation.
This
past year the Foundation continued its mission of supporting students and
academic projects, increasing the community pride in the educational programs,
and enhancing the level of communication between the school system and the
community. The Foundation funded many worthwhile educational projects, hosted
the annual fundraiser golf outing, honored the Class of 1950 at the all school
reunion, and awarded academic scholarships to two graduating OHS seniors.
Students benefited from over $13,000 of
funding requests. The single largest donation was a grant of $4500 as the
Foundation partnered with the school district to install air conditioners in
the elementary school. Now, all
classrooms at the grade school have air conditioning available, resulting in an
environment much more conducive to learning.
The high school also received $2,500 from the Foundation to update the
library book collection as well as
$1300 to purchase a projection unit for the agriculture department.
The
largest fundraiser, the annual golf outing, was played at Oak Glen Golf Course
in August. This well attended event
raised over $4,000 for the Foundation.
In addition, an all school reunion celebration was held in September in
conjunction with homecoming weekend.
The highlight of the weekend was a dinner reception where over 200
attendees honored the Class of 1950.
Jackson
Jenkins and Misty Shipman were awarded scholarships by the Foundation as the
class of 2000 recipients. Both students were recognized at graduation in honor
of their achievements.
The spring
of 2001 signals another exciting time for our schools and our community. A proposal is underway to renovate the grade
school buildings with a new addition.
This proposed expansion is overwhelmingly supported by the Academic
Foundation and provides the opportunity for our community and individuals to
once again come together in support of our schools and town.
Again,
on behalf of the Academic Foundation Board of Directors, thank you for your
continued support. We look forward to
another great academic year in 2001!
Best
wishes,
Steve

2000
All School Reunion
Homecoming 2000, September 29&30, at Oblong High School hosted approximately 300 alumni for the second All School Reunion. This successful event was sponsored by the Oblong Schools Academic Foundation and supported by the First Robinson Savings Bank. The event honored the class of 1950 as they celebrated their 50-year reunion.
Although the football game on Friday evening did not have
the desired result, the socializing on the perimeter of the football field was
in high gear. The dinner on Saturday evening was delightful and the
entertainment was superb. Phil Boyd, as
Master of Ceremonies, recognized people from as near as Oblong and as far away
as Anchorage, Alaska. Richard Staten
and his wife traveled from Anchorage, Alaska for the event.
Other states represented included Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. Phil also recognized Leonard Kirk as the most senior person representing the Class of 1925.
The entertainment for the evening was also home
grown. Darice Bailey-Green(1996), along
with two Millikin University classmates, have published a successful CD. Since one member of the group was unable to
attend, Darice’s brother Kyle (1992) filled in as the substitute. The group was accompanied by Phyllis Henry,
another Oblong graduate.

Golf Outing
The Oblong Schools Academic Foundation held its fifth
and most successful outing on August 4, 2000 at Oak Glen Golf Course. We
raised over $4100 to be used for the students of the Oblong School District.
This year 72 golfers participated and enjoyed a great day of golf and food.
As in the past, the event included lunch, 18 holes of golf, cart and prizes. |
|
|
All of our golfers had a great time and many of them
have been with us all five years. Our biggest
increase this year came from our HOLE SPONSORS. We had 31 sponsors in 2000 up
from 23 in 1999. A SPECIAL THANKS to these fine people who are really important
to our success each year. We gain
hole sponsors every year and they all come back year after year. |
ome hole sponsors even brought teams to play in the
outing. This was great because it gave the people of the Foundation a chance
to meet and thank the businesses and individuals for the support of our
school. All persons interested in helping make the 2001 event
even better should mark their calendar for Friday August 3, 2001. For
more information, or to be put on our mailing list, please contact the Golf
Committee at P.O. Box 205, Oblong, IL. 62449. |
